3 best methods for improving system performance

The concept of "system performance" shows the efficiency of a system's operations. Ensuring the performance of a system, which means maintaining its stable operation and quick user responses, is a crucial task for software manufacturers. So how do we ensure system performance? Please read the article below for more information.

1. Required elements of a system to meet performance issues

When implementing a multiple-user system, manufacturers need to ensure the following elements.

Performance

The response speed of the system is usually measured in units of time (usually ms). In simple terms, the response time is calculated from the time you start typing the website address on the browser until all the resources of that website are displayed (in stable network conditions).

Increasing system performance means reducing system response waiting time. A system with a fast response time will provide a better user experience.

Availability

Availability refers to the system's ability to operate at all times. Simply put, whenever you access the system, you get a response. Availability is measured by the uptime index.

For example, in 30 days, there is 1 day when the system does not work, so the update is about 97%. The more users the system has, the higher the uptime must be (because regardless of day and night, there are almost always users).

Scalability

When the number of system users increases rapidly, you need to increase the hardware to meet user needs, which prevents the system from overloading. Can this hardware increase be done easily? This is represented by scalability. The higher the scalability, the simpler the scale of the system and vice versa.

The expansion of the system includes two ways:

  • Increasing the size of a server

  • Increasing the number of servers.

With the method of increasing the size of a server, at a certain point we will encounter hardware limitations, so organizing the system to be able to scale by increasing the number of servers should be prioritized.

2. What are problems encountered when system performance is low?

Poor user experience

When the response of the system is too slow( poor performance), the user will not be able to persevere with the system. It is certain that users leave your system and switch to another system that runs faster. At that time, your product will lose users, resulting in a decrease in revenue and the company's reputation.

Users give up using the system

For example, you are using the online money transfer service of Bank A. When you want to make a payment, you use the services of Bank A to transfer money. But when you have just accessed it, you receive one-day maintenance information. After that, you come back but the system is still not working again. I'm sure you'll feel uncomfortable, even stop using Bank A's services.

For you, switching to another bank's services is simply changing your product. But for Bank A, they lost a loyal customer.

Poor system performance will have a negative impact on the entire business.

Poor system performance will have a negative impact on the entire business.

Inability to expand the business.

In case you develop a highly potential product, the number of users increases very rapidly. This requires you to constantly upgrade the system. But at certain times, due to technical limitations, you cannot upgrade your system anymore. Your number of customers is limited.

In order not to slow down the growth rate of the business, you have to build a new system, which costs a lot of money and effort. The business situation is also affected. If you thought about the scalability of the system from the beginning, there was no such problem.

3. Improve system performance solutions

Performance assurance

To ensure performance we can apply the following solutions:

  • Optimization in system design (system architecture design, functional division of services, database design, coding).

  • Use load balancing to divide requests from users to different servers, avoiding pressure on a server.

  • Using cache, resources that are often used by users can be stored in cache memory.

Availability assurance

Deploy the system on different servers. When a server has a problem (error, power failure, maintenance,...), the system still operates normally.

Scalability assurance

Separate the system into small components in functional groups so that it can be expanded independently according to each function.

Servers running the same business should be only handled logically and should not carry status or contain any data so that when adding or removing servers, they can be deployed easily.

4. Conclusion

System performance is a very important issue. Through this article, we hope that readers understand the importance of increasing system performance to optimize the user experience and business operations.
